This review appeared in a French blues magazine summer 2004, it
is a review of the "You're going to jail and your car is too," CD.
Wow what a surpirse! Chef Chris gives me the impression of being quite a character... Right off the bat,
the uniqueness of the name “Chef Chris and his Nairobi Trio” grabs your attention! And then the song selection!!
We move from Bo Diddley to Morganfield with a detour through the Stones' “Sympathy for the Devil” (an inspired
choice, just check out his mug...) Junior Wells next to Chuck Berry not to mention an impressive medley of Rice Miller’s
“Checking on my Baby,” Otis Redding’s “Fa fa fa,” and Cooper’s “Sad Song.” In
the middle of all this we find a little number guaranteed to put a smile on any sour-puss, Mancini’s “Elephant
Walk.” This in particular is an inspired bit of guitar-harmonica interplay. Mix this with the Chef’s own special
concoction, “You’re going to jail and your car is too,” a cut fit for a king that tells of a life well-spent.
Most of all however, note the sound of the CD itself – its a pure and direct sounding live record that doesn’t
send you scurrying to adjust your stereo’s EQ and level every five minutes. No embellishments, just a well-recorded honest
picture of a super act. And the covers?! Absolutely! each one daused with the Chef’s special sauce, a blues-gumbo guaranteed
to please the most finicky of appetites – and if there is ANYONE who disagrees, I challenge them to tell me about it!
Coming in at 100 Kilos and change, Chef Chris’ vocals are convincing and soulful, laced with a brute, raw energy. Plaintive
and charming, this accomplished harmonicist leads his trio with determination – it must be said that these three
devils convey loads of confidence through their music. Super guitar work that rips your guts out and then spits on them
- and as for the rable-rousers in the back, their work hardly escapes acclaim from yours trully but especially from the audience
that never escapes their powerful and intoxicating grip. This one rocks from start to finish!
